We at Natural & Cosmetic Dentistry in Clearwater, Florida, ideally resolve developmental problems that lead to bite- and airway-related deficiencies early. The idea with “myofunctional” therapy is to intervene with destructive behaviors like thumb-sucking as the jaws, and oral structures develop. Habits in early childhood can affect the position and function of the lips, tongue, and cheeks, resulting in debilitating pain, interrupted breathing during sleep, misalignment, and other symptoms.
Myobrace® is frequently described as a “pre-orthodontic treatment” for developing patients aged five to 15. It can prevent the need for conventional orthodontic systems, such as braces, by addressing mouth-breathing and other behaviors that negatively affect oral development. Among our pediatric patients, Myobrace® involves a combination of oral appliances and daily exercises. The appliances are worn daily for one to two hours and overnight, while the exercises are designed to enhance healthy respiration, support proper muscle function, and promote appropriate tongue posture.
Among our more “seasoned” patients, Myobrace® involves a range of three different oral appliances:
- A1 – This comfortable appliance flexes to achieve proper breathing through the nose while correcting damaging mouth-breathing.
- A2 – After healthy nasal patterns are established with the A1, our adult patients move on to this second appliance. Defined as an “arch expander,” the firmer A2 is designed to create more space in the palate. In turn, the A2 facilitates optimal tongue posture for further habit correction.
- A3 – The final and most firm appliance in this series, the A3 helps retain the expanded arch achieved with the A2 and refines remaining misalignment and bite problems.
As the Myofunctional Research Co., the makers of Myobrace® and other innovative appliance therapies will tell you, Myobrace® is for patients with permanent teeth. Since growth is almost or near completion, and poor functional habits are well-established, they note there may be less optimal outcomes with appliance therapy alone.
Fortunately, Dr. Carlson and Associates are adept at providing comprehensive and holistic treatment tailored to your one-of-a-kind needs. They personalize treatment to achieve optimal breathing and orthodontic outcomes with additional techniques promoting a healthy arch. Dr. Carlson and Associates may also complement your treatment with advanced orthodontic systems, such as discreet and comfortable clear aligner trays.
As with all Natural and Cosmetic Dentistry treatments, Myobrace® therapy starts with a consultation at our Clearwater office. If we determine this system is well-suited to relieve the effects of sleep-disordered breathing and related functional problems.
Generally, these lightweight and safe appliances are easy for our patients to adjust to, with little more than modest and temporary sensitivity as a common side effect. We can easily adjust wear time to account for discomfort and until the sensitivity subsides. We can also recommend specialized products to keep your appliances clean, healthy, and in top shape. Consistently clean appliances help to keep the bacteria that promote tooth decay and gum disease at bay.
